Forget the fact that we have nurtured his talent and brought his game on leaps and bounds, if a player wants to move, there’s not much you can do.Loyalty means nothing in today’s game or society, with everything driven by money and quick, easy success. I was hoping and praying that Milner would realise what we have done for him and quickly forget the riches he could make from jumping ship. All but a year ago, he was the perfect example of a player that was both professional and dedicated to progressing at club level, what has happened to this person?!
If anything now he should be biting the hand off Martin O’Neill for this new contract after making him the player he is, for beaming the player up to the heights of World Cup football and making him flourish in a position that is natural too him. What do we get? A player forcing a move to a team that is throwing money about to build a team of ego’s overnight and attempt to break into the top six.
How dare he force a move to such a club, maybe if he moved to a team like Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester United it would be understandable? They have Champions League football, the best managers in football and play the sort of football Milner would fit into. Just where would Milner fit at City with Barry, De Jong, Johnson, Yaya Toure, Viera, Weiss, Phillips, Ireland and David Silva all vying for his position? The answer is he wouldn’t be guaranteed anything more than he would be getting at Villa and this more than anything angers me to the core.
I’m still hoping that this whole situation is proved to be made up and a fabrication by the media but the facts are Milner gave a cagey press conference that signalled nothing but disloyalty at the World Cup and has since kept silent. This does not sound like a player whose mind is firmly a villain and until I’m proved wrong, I think it’s disgusting that we as a club and fans are treated in this way.
If it is true and he has handed in a transfer request, I hope he is sold quickly, because although Milner has been absolutely fantastic for us, he is by no means irreplaceable. Get McGeady, Keane and Ireland, push Young up alongside a striker and watch a new phase of the team blossom and the seasonal renaissance start again.
This is why I have the upmost respect for Ashley Young, he knows he is learning alot from Martin and has progressed into an astute, albeit underrated, top class winger. Yet he knows he has alot to improve on and is aware he needs to step up a level next season, despite establishing himself as one of the best wingers in Europe.
Milner obviously has alot to learn.
